Land We Love: A Letter to Jamaica

It hurts my soul to know that the place I was born and raised is destroyed. It hurts even more to realize that I didn’t take it seriously at first, but in an instant, overnight, I woke up seeing images of what was beautiful become ugly. Not just that, but to wake up calling my parents and not being able to hear from them. The feeling of devastation took over; I was lost, not knowing what to think. But within a few hours, I was able to confirm they were okay, and the feeling of relief came. Still, hearing about all that was lost, sadness lingered, so I had to write to my people.

Jamaica, through it all, my people, we must realize we are strong; we are resilient. We have overcome so much in the past, and we can overcome again. However, we must come together and remember that Marcus Garvey taught us that unity is strength, and the only way to win is for the people to unite.

Remember the national motto, “Out of Many, One People.” It reminds us that we are one nation, one family, and together we can sustain. So let us put our differences aside, fill our hearts with love and gratitude, and build back a stronger Jamaica where we can smile again, where we can feel the joy of our beautiful island.

In spite of the fact that the island is in an ugly state now, remember what it was like before, and let those memories bring you back to that place. Granted, this may not happen overnight, but it will happen. It will be a story we live to tell our children’s children about how through great disaster, we found love within one another and sought a better future for all.

While I cannot stand beside you physically, I am with you in spirit. I may not feel the exact pain, but I feel the stress and weight you all must be going through. So be strong, my people, my people in St. Elizabeth, St. Ann, Manchester, Trelawny, and the other parishes. Be strong.

I know the struggle; those who feel it know it. I have felt it, for I have seen what the sea can do on a windy day, so I can only imagine what it has done now. However, I beg you, do not lose faith. Come together again, and know that in due time, we will rise and see a brighter future.

For love is everywhere, and that love will bring us to paradise once more. Remember your national anthem. Remember that the Eternal Father will bless our land. He will guide us with His mighty hand and keep us away from evil powers. He will be our light in countless hours. He is our great Leader, and He has granted wisdom.

So, with what He has taught us, we will respect each other and respond to our duty to make Jamaica great again, for Jamaica, land we love. It is our courage and our armor for sure. With justice guarding our freedom, we stand, and we shall endure.

I pledge my heart, and I know we all will pledge our hearts, to see a shining homeland again and again.
